Escape from New York

It was Peter and Elisabeth's last night in New York. We kept it a somewhat subdued evening with dinner at the Times Square Brewery, which is turning out to be a usual haunt of mine. It's a great place to take visitors because of the view. After that we went for a drink at Revolution, a bar near the apartment. The four of us stayed up rather late but eventually I had to call it a night, having to get up for work and all, unlike the rest of them (grumble, grumble.) I suppose I should be grateful I don't have that dreadfully long flight to deal with like our guest do, as they fly back to Munich.

The two of them were kind enough to get me a gift to show their thanks for the spot of floor and Aerobed I let them use. They got me this high tech toaster. First the pot, now a toaster. I told them I could use a blender, just in case they want to get ready for the next time I see them. Actually, I'm grateful for it, it's been on my list of things to pick up for about six months now. As toasters go, this one is pretty elaborate. It has a "Cancel" button, even. No more pushing the little lever up when you want to get the smoldering, blackened toast out, now you push "Cancel". Too bad there's no "Undo."

Tonight Conny and I are going to the Jam Comedy Benefit at the Town Hall, which has a great line up of talent, including my boy Lewis Black. I find him to be consistently hilarious, in a very angry, New York sort of way. He lives in New York, and I ran into him once a funky bath and beauty store near my house. I even chatted with him about after-holiday shopping (It was December.) Not wanting to be a dork, I didn't say the usual "I think you're really funny/I love your work" line. Later, I realized that he probably would have been happy to hear that, so in not trying to be a dork, I was a dork. Maybe next time, I'll be ready.

We've got more visitors descending upon us soon in New York. These visitors, however, will not be needing the use of the Aerobed. More first-time face-to-face meetings with people I've only known over ICQ. I enjoy when the digital, wired world converges with meatspace. Should be quite enjoyable for sure.
