On the front line
Looks like kink is just getting more and more mainstream. Just like gays and lesbians coming out of the closet and becoming a visible part of the cultural landscape a few years ago, I think the same thing is happening with kink. And, just like homosexuality, we'll hear the same shit. But, after a couple of years, people will realize it's just sex, and civilization will continue, just like it always did. Oddly, the New York scene is one of the most uptight, thanks to our facist mayor. In a Philadelphia club, you can have sex (if you do it safely) if you want to. After all, it's a private club, there's only adults there, so what's the problem if two people want to do it, and the club doesn't mind? Don't try this in New York City, though... Not that SM is solely about public play, but for every tiny increment of visibility kink gets, tons of private people find it easier and easier to be kinky in the privacy of their own homes. The most active and visible people in the SM scene benefit the rest of us. Now it's easier to find out about SM, easier to buy toys and clothing, and easier to feel okay about being nonvanilla. This is a good thing.
