Opportunity knocks

An email crossed my desktop from Master Steelow asking for "normal" people involved in the >SM public scene to attend a Rikki Lake taping. The topic/theme of the show wasn't mentioned.

I have great respect for Steelow, and I wish him luck with it. Frankly, I wouldn't touch that with a ten-foot pole. And it's not just because few people would qualify me as "normal". Shows of that ilk aren't about journalism, or information. They are about spectacle. Often times it's spectacle with a hidden agenda, and if you're on the receiving end of that agenda, you'll be chewed up and spit out. I think a lot of good folks like Steelow get involved because they are hoping they can help shape it and present things in the best possible way, but those talk shows are run-away steamrollers. You can't win on their turf.

I personally don't think SM needs that kind of exposure anyway. At best, it'll be harmless fun, and at worst, it'll present people in the most freakish light possible. The bulk of the Rikki Lake demographic aren't watching to learn something about themselves, or anyone else, for that matter. They watch to see the monkeys dance so they can have a few laughs.

I hope I'm wrong about the whole thing.
